Where is the Bridge of Lions ?
The Bridge of Lions seems to be disappearing as of late. However, the reality is that the arched steel girders, a major portion of the bridge structure, are being shipped to specialized company Florida Structural Steel in Lakeland , Florida for rehabilitation. After each 120-foot to 240-foot arched girder is removed from the bridge and carefully placed on a barge, it is ferried to shore and set atop a specially designed and permitted truck to be shipped to Lakeland . Due to the length of the girders, they are often shipped out of downtown St. Augustine in the middle of the night to avoid major impacts to traffic flow. The photos included here show removal of the girders and nighttime shipment on their way out of St. Augustine . Once the renewed foundation for the Bridge of Lions is complete, the rehabilitated steel girders will be brought back to St. Augustine and placed into their original locations supporting the bridge structure. |
