ST. AUGUSTINE – The Bridge of Lions is green!
Well . . . it's not actually green right now, but it was in 1927.
Detailed laboratory analysis, conducted by Welsh Color & Conservation Inc. of Pennsylvania, recently revealed that the original paint color on the Bridge of Lions at its opening in 1927 was green. Researchers studied several layers of primers and paints from decades-old railings and steel girders, including some layers that had been almost completely sandblasted off, leaving scant evidence for examination.
The Fall 2007 issue of the Bridge of Lions Bulletin project newsletter, which displays photographic renderings of the rehabilitated bridge with its original color, is currently being distributed throughout the cities of St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach. The newsletter and the photographic renderings are also available on the website at www.FDOTBridgeofLions.com
The Bridge of Lions Rehabilitation project, funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), began in February 2005. Project completion is anticipated in mid-2010, excluding potential weather delays.
