ST. AUGUSTINE –Beginning Wednesday night, March 29, 2006, on the east end of the Bridge of Lions, two intersections at the North Davis Shores neighborhood and Anastasia Boulevard will be closed for approximately two months. The closures will affect the intersection at St. Augustine Boulevard and Anastasia Boulevard and the intersection at Gerado Street and St. Augustine Boulevard. Traffic to the neighborhood and to the adjacent Edgewater Hotel will be detoured through the neighborhood using Zorayda Street, Oglethorpe Boulevard and Arpieka Avenue.
The road closures will accommodate drainage and sidewalk work as part of the Bridge of Lions Rehabilitation Project and will accommodate build up of the roadway to the temporary bridge.
Motorists are advised to be aware of new traffic control devices in the area, including traffic cones, barrels, barricades and barrier walls. Traffic control devices will be positioned to ensure safety of the public and the construction crews.
The rehabilitation of the Bridge of Lions, funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), began in February 2005 and is expected to last approximately five years, excluding potential weather delays. Special provisions during construction will help maintain the historic value of the structure upon completion. The Bridge of Lions, originally opened to traffic in 1927, spans the Matanzas River to connect historic St. Augustine and Anastasia Island.
For more information regarding the bridge rehabilitation, please contact Laurie Sanderson in the public information office at (904) 825-3647 or at info@FDOTBridgeofLions.com.
