ST. AUGUSTINE –Closure of the north sidewalk along the Bridge of Lions and closure of the west end of Flagler Boulevard are anticipated to occur by the end of this month. Also, 30 mph speed limit signs in the project area and on the Bridge of Lions have been replaced by 25 mph signs for the duration of the project.
Project officials decided to close the sidewalk along the north edge of the Bridge of Lions to eliminate potential safety hazards to pedestrians and bicyclists during pile driving activities to construct the temporary bridge. The south sidewalk will remain open.
Initial plans to close Flagler at the beginning of the bridge rehabilitation project in February were delayed by unavailability of proper signage to ensure clear notification of the closure and to ensure motorist safety.
Flagler Boulevard is located in the North Davis Shores neighborhood on the east end of the Bridge of Lions. Flagler Boulevard will become a cul-de-sac in the project’s final roadway configuration.
The rehabilitation of the Bridge of Lions, funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is expected to last approximately five years, excluding potential weather delays. Special provisions during construction will help maintain the historic value of the structure upon completion. Originally opened to traffic in 1927, the Bridge of Lions spans the Matanzas River, connecting historic St. Augustine to Anastasia Island.
