ST. AUGUSTINE –During Fourth of July celebrations in St. Augustine, the public is not permitted to access construction sites associated with the Bridge of Lions Rehabilitation project. These areas include the north and south parks on the west end of the bridge, which are fenced, and any work platform adjacent to land or any barge in the water near the bridge.

This restriction of access is in the interest of public safety. The work areas contain many items necessary for construction which may pose a safety hazard to members of the public.

Construction sites are not open to the public, and trespassing on a construction site is a felony.

The Bridge of Lions Rehabilitation Project team wishes the community a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July celebration.

The rehabilitation of the Bridge of Lions, funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), began in February 2005 and is expected to last approximately five years, excluding potential weather delays. Special provisions during construction will help maintain the historic value of the structure upon completion. The Bridge of Lions, originally opened to traffic in 1927, spans the Matanzas River to connect historic St. Augustine and Anastasia Island.

For more information regarding the bridge rehabilitation, please contact Laurie Sanderson in the public information office at (904) 825-3647 or at info@FDOTBridgeofLions.com.
